One example in the Bible about haughtiness and arrogance is Absalom, son of King David. Absalom’s half-brother, Amnon, raped Tamar, Absalom’s sister, and David did not punish Amnon. Absalom was furious at David and grew vengeful, and after two years, had Amnon killed. He also wanted to take the kingship away from David, his father, and become king himself. In his mind, Absalom thought he could do a better job than David. Absalom built a great army and led a rebellion against David, forcing David to flee from Jerusalem. Eventually, the servants of David, in a battle, defeated Absalom’s army. Absalom fled, but his hair got caught in tree branches, and David’s men killed him against David’s wishes. Oh, what suffering is caused by arrogance and haughtiness? Dear Heavenly Father, forgive us our sins of arrogance and haughtiness. Create in us clean hearts that are humble and obedient. Keep us from the wiles of the enemy each day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Proverbs 16:5: “Everyone proud and arrogant in heart is disgusting, hateful, and exceedingly offensive to the Lord; be assured they will not go unpunished.”
