The Lord calls lying an abomination, a disgrace, an atrocity, and an abhorrence. One example is when Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold their field but kept part of the proceeds. They put the rest of the money at the feet of the apostles for the good of the community, saying they had brought all the proceeds. Peter stated that Ananias had lied, not to men, but to God. Ananias died instantly on the spot and was carried out. When his wife, Sapphira, showed up, she too lied to Peter and to God, saying they had brought all the proceeds from the sale of the field. When her lie was exposed, she, too, fell and died at Peter’s feet.
Another example was when Peter lied three times that he did not know Jesus, nor was he one of Jesus’ followers. When the cock crowed, Peter remembered the prediction as Jesus turned to look at him. Peter broke down and wept for his sins. Jesus wants to have a relationship with Him, to draw closer to God. It is not enough to just believe in God; we need to invest in this relationship through prayer, fellowship, and reading God’s word. It is only when the truth will cause unnecessary harm to God’s people or prevent genocide that it is recognized by many as a legitimate exception. Dear Heavenly Father, forgive us all our sins of lying and fibbing. We need to honor You, Father, in all ways. Help us to be truthful no matter the circumstances. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Proverbs 19:9: “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he who breathes forth lies shall perish.”
